The One Shot That Matters — The Gong

The Gong bash toy is right of the right orbit, flanked by two orange X targets. Hit it to start Island Scenes (the game's primary modes), light KING KONG letters, and activate various features throughout the game. On the Pro, you need to hit island arrows first to light the Gong for scene start — on Premium/LE the Gong always starts scenes directly. The Gong is easier to backhand from the left flipper than to shoot directly from the right. It's your gateway to nearly every major feature in the game.

Between Us — What Makes This Game Hard

This game has an unusual flipper layout with three left inlanes, an outlane between two of them, and a center post. The mini-flipper area in the upper left has four drop targets, a cliffs ramp, and a river lane — it's almost a mini-playfield unto itself. The spider pit on the far left has a magnet that grabs the ball during pit multiballs, which is cool but disorienting. The game's depth is comparable to Avengers: Infinity Quest — there are easily a dozen interconnected scoring systems. Don't try to understand all of them. Focus on the loop: hit the Gong → play a Scene → climb the building → start a multiball. Everything else layers on top naturally.

Your Game Plan

Skill Shots, Start an Island Scene

BALL 1

Make Unique Skill Shots Earnable

Three skill shot types: plunge into a left inlane, the spider pit targets, or the river lane (plus a hidden reflex flip up the cliffs ramp). Each unique skill shot lights a KING KONG letter at the Gong and adds ball save time. Memorize the plunger strength for each target — during the Deadeye mode later, you'll get unlimited skill shots for 30 seconds and this muscle memory pays off.

Shoot the Gong → Start an Island Scene Earnable

Hit the Gong Bash Toy to start one of 5 Island Scenes. Each scene is a 60-second timed mode with specific shot requirements. Completing a scene awards a map segment (6 total needed for Treasure Hunts). On the Pro, you may need to hit island arrows first to light the Gong. Pick scenes carefully — avoid Cross the Chasm early, as it doesn't play well stacked with multiballs.

Hit Yellow Climb Arrows Earnable

Yellow arrows around the playfield advance your climb up the building. Reaching 200 ft and 500 ft thresholds lights Punchback / Island Lock (qualifying your next scene to become a 2-ball multiball) and NYC Events. Climb progress carries across balls, so even a few climb shots on Ball 1 compound later.

Work the Drop Targets Earnable

The Lost Temple Drop Targets in the mini-flipper area have multiple uses: completing them lights King Kong Multiball locks at the center ramp, advances the Lost Temple feature, and feeds the island treasure target behind them. Sweepable from multiple flippers — an Elwin signature.

Start King Kong Multiball, Play Scenes with Island Locks

BALL 2

Complete Drops → Lock Balls → King Kong Multiball Earnable

When 'Light Kong Lock' is lit, complete the Lost Temple Drop Targets to light the center ramp for ball locks. Lock 3 balls and Kong destroys the train car to start multiball. During multiball, complete the drops again to light jackpots at the punchback target and cliffs ramp. Shoot green shots for awards and relock at the center ramp for 20 seconds of 2x scoring on all jackpots.

Play an Island Scene with Island Lock Earnable

If you've reached the climb threshold, your next scene starts as a 2-ball multiball. During the scene, complete the required shots to start a Victory Challenge — shoot the Cliffs Ramp to light an Island Jackpot at the spider pit. Hit the pit within 5 seconds of the cliffs shot for a 2x Island Jackpot. This is the single biggest payout from scenes.

Light 2x Scoring via Orange X Targets Earnable

The two orange standup targets flanking the Gong start 2x scoring when completed. During 2x, a roving orange target extends the timer. Stack this with a scene or multiball for doubled payouts. Easy to activate, easy to forget about — check for it before starting any big feature.

Spell KING KONG, Push for Crash the Gate

BALL 3

Spell KING → Deadeye, Spell KING KONG → T-Rex Battle Earnable

KING KONG letters light at the Gong from unique skill shots, climbing enough, and switch hit thresholds. Spelling KING lights Deadeye at the right VUK — 30 seconds of unlimited skill shots, with a jackpot at the river lane every 3 skill shots. Spelling KING KONG lights the T-Rex Battle: a 4-ball multiball where you clear colored shots to light the spider pit for a button-mashing Pummel phase.

Collect Map Segments → Start a Treasure Hunt Earnable

Completing Island Scenes, NYC Events, and other objectives awards map segments. Once you have all 6, shoot the Kong Cave VUK to start a Treasure Hunt. Make the randomly lit gold shots to find a treasure — a permanent perk for the rest of the game. These perks compound across multiple hunts.

Crash the Gate (6th Scene) Earnable

After playing all 5 Island Scenes, the 6th scene — Crash the Gate — unlocks at the Gong. Any lit shot lights the Gong for a hurry-up based on your total mode scoring. Complete sets of shots to light a super jackpot at the side ramp that increases with each set. This is the culminating mode of the island progression.

Stay Alive Out There

  • The Center Post Is Intentional: King Kong is designed with a center post in mind — it can save weak center ramp shots. Don't ignore it. Some tournaments may remove it, but if it's there, it's part of the design.
  • Use the Action Button for the Log Bridge: When the river lane is lit via drop targets, the right spinner sends the ball through the river to the left flipper. But if you press the action button, it activates the log diverter and sends the ball to the upper flipper instead. This is a safer feed and gives you access to different shots. Learn this toggle.
  • The Punchback Shot Kicks Back Hard: The punchback orbit has a kicker that fires the ball back toward the upper flipper. It's aptly named — be ready. During certain modes the kicker turns off and the ball locks in a hidden sinkhole instead.
  • Three Left Inlanes, One Hidden Outlane: The unusual left side has three inlanes with an outlane sandwiched between two of them. This means balls can drain from the left in ways you don't expect on other machines. The Cliffhanger feature at the left outlane is a last-chance save — watch for it.

Don't Be a Hero

  • Spider Pit Multiballs (As Primary Strategy): The spider pit requires 4 shots to start (increasing by 2 each time). The three pit multiballs rotate every 10 seconds — Giant Spider is the best. They're useful as utility multiballs to stack with scenes, but the scoring from pit multiballs alone is modest. Don't chase them as your main feature.
  • Cross the Chasm (Island Scene): Kineticist specifically warns against playing Cross the Chasm if you're planning to stack with an island lock or multiball. Save it for when you're playing scenes solo.
  • Rapids (Early Game): Rapids starts at 5 river shots — shoot the right spinner repeatedly to build a jackpot collected at the Kong Cave. It's a fun scoring loop but requires significant setup. Focus on scenes and multiball first; rapids is a Ball 3 bonus opportunity.
Between Us — Scoring Benchmarks

Average games score around 100M. Good tournament games break 300M. The game is still getting code updates as of early 2026, so scoring targets may shift. For league, consistently hitting 150M+ is competitive.

Between Us — It Plays Like 90s Williams

Elwin designed this to evoke the feel of Indiana Jones and Congo — the atmosphere, the exploration theme, the four-flipper layout. If you've played those classics, the flow language will feel familiar. The drop targets in particular echo Quicksilver's sweepable design, updated for modern play.

Between Us — Code Is Still Evolving

King Kong launched in mid-2025 and is still receiving meaningful code updates. Features like the T-Rex Battle, NYC Events, and various quality-of-life improvements have been added post-launch. Scoring values, difficulty settings, and even some mode mechanics may change. Check the display for the current code version.

Between Us — NYC Events Have Three Play Styles

When an NYC Event is available (from climbing thresholds), you choose how to play it: as a multiball with 1x scoring, as limited flips with 2x scoring, or as single-ball with 3x scoring. Weigh the risk/reward based on your confidence level. The 2x limited flips option is a good middle ground.
